We visited our very first castle of Europe today, it was located just outside the town of Landstuhl. The construction of Nanstein began in the 12th century, and lasted through the 16th century where it was re-constructed and expanded several times. Nanstein was badly damaged in a battle in 1523, which marked the end of castles being used as fortresses in Central Europe (largely due to the increased range of cannon fire). The knight that was the master of the castle, Franz von Sickingen, died from wounds suffered in the same battle that badly damaged Nanstein.
Walking through this castle really made you feel that you were walking through history. Landon and Gavin thought they were knights, carrying sticks as swords. However, I did not appreciate how many times they told me they were going to lock me in jail : ).
The Nanstein Castle is a very short drive from Ramstein. We actually had looked at a home online that had a view of this castle from the family room window. The house was already rented out before we even had a chance. But we had a lovely time visiting the castle today. We were the only ones there, so the boys really got to explore and play make believe. They have both thanked us many times today for taking them there, and Gavin keeps saying he wants to go back.
